Crystal McMillan, owner/operator holds a master’s degree in leadership, a diploma certificate in nutritional counseling, and is an E-RYT500 yoga teacher. Crystal is also a recognized leader in bear conservation. Crystal is an active member of the International Organization for Nutritional Consultants (IONC) and the International Yoga Teachers Association (IYTA), as well as an active participant of the Royal Roads University Leadership program. Crystal’s passion for bear conservation led her to develop Bear Smart BC Consulting, Inc., (2004), a company that works to reduce human-caused conflict with bears.
To bridge Crystal’s diverse educational achievements and her passion for health and wellness practices and bears, Bare Roots Natural Health Centre was born. The name ‘bare roots’ was chosen for the company’s name because ‘bear root’ is a medicinal plant used for improving human health, including: circulation, respiratory illnesses, and viral infections. The plant also has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties (Lynn, 2010). In Native American folklore there is a story told of the brown bear’s affinity for the bear root plant. The bears would eat the roots and rub it on their fur to rid themselves of parasites. The Navajo credit the bear with leading them to powerful medicine (Cowen,1990).[columns]
